Mathematic symbols

How do I insert mathematic symbols such as square roots, fraction lines, etc
into a word document?

Some symbols can be easily added using Subscript and Superscript (square
roots, etc.). Some can be added using an EQ field. Some can be added using
"Insert", "Symbols". Some can be done using the built-in Equation Editor
("Insert", "Object", "Equation 3.0").
