mathematic symbols/characters

how do I insert a radical (square root symbol) into Word? I've seen on some
computers there is an extra drop down box in the insert symbol menu in the
upper right hand corner that has a variety of differnent things. how do I get
that on my computer?
 
What version of Word do you have? What font are you using?
