Masters and Themes in PowerPoint 2007

I have a presentation that is created using a particular master slide. I
would like to change this master slightly and have the ability to apply
either the original master or the new, slightly changed master to other
presentations I open.

I tried duplicating the master and making changes. I am able to apply the
new master to the open presentation, but cannot go back to the original once
closing the master view. I also do not see the new master available when
opening other presentations.

I also tried saving the original presentation and one using the modified
master as themes. When attempting to change between themes, however, I lose
formatting (colored boxes) that are in the original slide master. I imagine
this is because the themes are based on a different slide master when I
change themes, but this pretty much takes me back to the original problem.

Is there a way to easily switch between either themes or slide masters?

Thank you,
Tom

I'm not sure I understand this:

What do you mean, you can't go back to the original once closing master
view. What exactly are you trying to do?
I also do not see the new master available when
opening other presentations.

Yeah, the new master is available in the file you created it in. It doesn't
become available elsewhere (in another presentation) until you apply the
template or theme that includes the new master you created to the other
presentation.
