Master Slides and formatting

B

Barbara522

OK - i am starting to figure out the master slides for page numbering etc but
why do my graphics move and my font change when pulling slides from one
presentation into another? I have 75 from one and 150 from another that need
to become one presentation. If i start in one and pull the others in - they
reformat - font size changes and graphics move. Why won't it retain the
original formatting from one to the other??? Either way i am looking at hand
rebuilding about half of the slides. We share them back and forth so often
that this is not a good thing. Any suggestions other than switching back to
the previous version of ppt???

Thanks,
Barbara

Can you give some specifics, Barbara?

I've seen a few different things happening here. One could be a printer
driver issue. Try this:

How to install a TEST printer driver
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00952.htm

Another could be a bug I've run into where, when you paste or Reuse Slides,
textboxes (not placeholders) get reformatted and don't follow "keep source
formatting" as we'd expect.

Can you tell us specifically what's going awry?

I have tried copy/paste from another presentation that i made - i also have
tried the re-use/insert slide route. On the slide i have tabs - columns and
underlines. When it is brought into another presentation - also one i made -
the font gets changed, the text/tabs all move and not to the same places or
distances. On some slides my graphics go to left justified and the text goes
to the right. In other words - they are a mess! When i have to combine
75-90 slides from one and 150 from another I am looking at a couple days at
the very least to fix them all. I have tried the keep source formatting and
it does not work. These slides have technical specifications and math
equations on them and if they are wrong it could cause big problems. To
rebuild them every time i need to use them is not practical. If i can't find
a solution i will be going back to 2002 or 2003 PowerPoint. When i built the
book in that yesterday it worked like a dream. I live in PowerPoint and have
over 25 books in it for our Consultants. I need it to work the way it used
to.

Barbara

I think you're mostly running into the bug (?) with "keep source formatting"
not being kept.

However the issue with the tabs is expected. PPT 2007 applies tabs to each
"paragraph" of text, but 2003 applied the tab settings to the entire
textbox -- to all lines in the textbox. I've run into issues with this not
translating well, too. (I think I'll bug that, actually.)

If I were you, I'd find a version of 2003 and insert the slides in it. That
will get rid of the "keep source formatting" issue, anyway. It (probably)
won't fix the tabs problem when you open the file in 2007, though.

No, you're not crazy. At least not about this. :)

Generally, you shouldn't have too many issues opening the file in 2003
unless you've used new PPT 2007 features -- glows, reflections, tabs on each
line, etc. You can run the compatibility checker and see what it flags.
That's under the Office Button, Prepare (I think).

Charts may give you problems if you need to edit them, but it depends on if
they were converted to PPT 2007 (Excel 2007) charts or not.

Unfortunately there's no magic bullet for working cross-version. It's a
tough situation, I know.

I have found another wrinkle that has cemented the fact that i will be
returning to 2003. 2007 has altered all of my animations. They all still
say that they will activate "after previous" but they only work when you
click on them! My consultants would have a fit since their questions and
examples require them to work they way i programmed them. Others here might
not agree with your assessment that i am not crazy but i like your viewpoint!
Thanks for your input. This has been an incredbily frustrating week with
encroaching deadlines and i am not one to give up until i solve the problem.
This was kicking my backside something fierce.

Thank you again. Is there some way that we can be notified if they ever
come up with fixes for these annoying bugs? I would like to upgrade
eventually so that i can keep on the same tech level as my translation house
etc.

There's not any kind of alerts service or site. But keep an eye out here,
I'm sure improvements will be mentioned.

However, your animations really shouldn't be behaving differently. That's
weird. There weren't any changes to animation in 2007.

formatting"
not being kept.

However the issue with the tabs is expected. PPT 2007 applies tabs to
each
"paragraph" of text, but 2003 applied the tab settings to the entire
textbox -- to all lines in the textbox. I've run into issues with this
not
translating well, too. (I think I'll bug that, actually.)

If I were you, I'd find a version of 2003 and insert the slides in it.
That
will get rid of the "keep source formatting" issue, anyway. It
(probably)
won't fix the tabs problem when you open the file in 2007, though.

I have tried copy/paste from another presentation that i made - i
also
have
tried the re-use/insert slide route. On the slide i have tabs -
columns
and
underlines. When it is brought into another presentation - also one
i
made -
the font gets changed, the text/tabs all move and not to the same
places
or
distances. On some slides my graphics go to left justified and the
text
goes
to the right. In other words - they are a mess! When i have to
combine
75-90 slides from one and 150 from another I am looking at a couple
days
at
the very least to fix them all. I have tried the keep source
formatting
and
it does not work. These slides have technical specifications and
math
equations on them and if they are wrong it could cause big problems.
To
rebuild them every time i need to use them is not practical. If i
can't
find
a solution i will be going back to 2002 or 2003 PowerPoint. When i
built
the
book in that yesterday it worked like a dream. I live in PowerPoint
and
have
over 25 books in it for our Consultants. I need it to work the way
it
used
to.

Thanks,
Barbara

Can you give some specifics, Barbara?

I've seen a few different things happening here. One could be a
printer
driver issue. Try this:

How to install a TEST printer driver
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00952.htm

Another could be a bug I've run into where, when you paste or Reuse
Slides,
textboxes (not placeholders) get reformatted and don't follow "keep
source
formatting" as we'd expect.

Can you tell us specifically what's going awry?

OK - i am starting to figure out the master slides for page
numbering
etc
but
why do my graphics move and my font change when pulling slides
from
one
presentation into another? I have 75 from one and 150 from
another
that
need
to become one presentation. If i start in one and pull the
others
in -
they
reformat - font size changes and graphics move. Why won't it
retain
the
original formatting from one to the other??? Either way i am
looking
at
hand
rebuilding about half of the slides. We share them back and
forth
so
often
that this is not a good thing. Any suggestions other than
switching
back
to
the previous version of ppt???

Thanks,
Barbara

Barbara - I've been moving from 2003 to 2007 and have noticed that things
have changed in my PP file. Sometimes a graphic that was behind the text is
now in front of the text and text blocks sometimes move around just enough
that it creates a visual issue. I'm further compounded by the use of 15
different masters in my file. The main difference in the masters is really
for section numbering, 1-x for section one, 2-x for section two, x starts at
1 and goes to the total number of slides. This makes it easy for my class to
keep in-sync with the presentation. Also it makes it easier for me when I
need to modify a section, it helps ensure I'm in the correct section of the
file. In 2003 my use of multiple masters was rather limited but since
installing 2007 I've started to use them a lot more. The major issue is
making global changes to all of the masters, let's assume I'm moving a line
that is at the top of my slide that normally separates the header from the
body. It is necessary that I find this on all master slides. In 2007 for
each master I see a set of slides, this is good but making changes gets much
more complex. Also it is VERY difficult to maintain a "master" that I will
use for all of my presentations. Example, you have five presentations and
need to make a change to the master slide. If you want this change reflected
in all five presentations it is necessary to repeat the changes in all five
presentations. Now if you have a 100 presentations I think you are in deep
mud.

I'm not aware of any method to compare the master in presentation one to
presentation two unless it is just a visual check which is really not going
to work for a lot of things.
