Master Roles and Global Catalog

I have a new Windows 2000 server, which will eventually replace an old Windows 2000 server, which is now a Domain Controller and Global Catalaog server. The new server is now an additional Domain Controller of the only local domain. If I promote it to become Global Catalog server, does it automatically acquire the the MASTER ROLES of the old server performing now as Global Catalog server? Does it also automatically become a schema FSMO holder? What could be the problem in a domain with two global catalog servers, and at the same time performing the master roles?

By making a Domain Controller a Global Catalog holder it does not get
any FSMO roles.

There can only ever be one server holding each of the FSMO roles
(different servers can hold different roles), if you are retiring a
controller that holds any of the FSMO roles you will need to transfer
those roles off the box before it is retired.

Reference the following article to transfer those roles:

Stefan a holder of FSMO roles can as well be a Global Catalog Server, How
ever in a multi domain environment the FSMO Role IM can can't be at a Domain
Controller with a Global Catalog.

I agree... but this isn't a multi-domain environemnt. The conflict
between the GC and the IM would only present itself in a multi-domain
environment.

Jess,

It is best practice to have multiple Domain Controllers as well as multiple
GCs. It is the placement of the GCs that is very important in larger
environments. As you have only one domain the placement is less important
( before anyone jumps on me for this I mean that there are far fewer things
to consider in a one domain / tree / forest environment than in any other
set up, including these huge companies out there that span the globe and
have hundreds, if not thousands of Sites ).

As Stefan and Chris are discussing, once you add a second domain ( either a
child domain or another domain tree ) it is important to make sure that
everything is covered properly. This includes ensuring that either all DCs
are also Global Catalog Servers or that the DC that holds the FSMO Role of
Infrastructure Master is -NOT- a Global Catalog Server ( due to the
'phantom' issue ).

However, to answer your question directly - whether or not a Domain
Controller holds any of the FSMO Roles has no bearing on whether or not a
Domain Controller can be made a Global Catalog server. I am speaking from a
purely technical point of view. Naturally, you need to consider the things
mentioned above if they apply. Furthermore, which role a Domain Controller
might hold has no bearing on whether or not that Domain Controller can be
made a Global Catalog Server. Again, this is from a purely technical point
of view. You would need to take the above into consideration.
Additionally, a Domain Controller does not need to hold any of the FSMO
roles to be made into a Global Catalog Server. Finally, making a Domain
Controller a Global Catalog Server does not transfer any of the FSMO Roles
to that Domain Controller.

Cary
