'Master Browser' errors in Event Viewer

M

Mark Timerding

I have a home network cosisting of 3 computers (a Dell,
a Micron, and an Alienware) The Dell is running XP Home,
the other two XP Pro .... all three have been updated to sp2.
(which apparently is working fine on all 3 so far)

My problem is every day, I get several errors in the Event
Viewer saying:

"Event Type: Error
Event Source: MRxSmb
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8003
Date: (whatever the date)
Time: (Whatever the time)
User: N/A
Computer: (Anyone of the three computers)
Description:
The master browser has received a server announcement
from the computer "XXXXX( any of the other two computers)
that believes that it is the
master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_
{3B33CCAB-8F46-4E51-8D. The master browser is stopping
or an election is being forced. For more information,
see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com
/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 00 00 00 00 03 00 4e 00 .......
0008: 00 00 00 00 43 1f 00 c0 ......
0010: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0018: 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........"

This is not a major problem, as everything seems to be working fine
so far ... but I would prefer to not get in the habit of ignorning ERRORS
in the Event viewer if I can help it. Help & Support Center gives no advice
or clue what to do. Basically just says "See the Adminstrator" or something
like that.

Is there any way to change this behavior? I personally dont care which of
the three computers is this so called "Master Browser" if any. I just want
the errors to stop.

Thank You

Use the registry changes described in the above article -- to designate the
computer of your choice as the master browser, and to stop the others from
trying to be one.

Thanks for the info, Chris ...... now I dont have 3 computers
screaming errors at me everytime they boot up!

One note tho, for anyone else that has to do this ... I used the
'Services' change recommeded on that site for the XP Pro machine,
However I had to do the regedit thing on the XP Home Machine
to get it to stop. At either rate, it is gone now ... I'm happy.
