Master Boot Record

Hi,

We have Windows 2000 Server. I've read that using
Recovery Console's FIXMBR command could damage the
partition tables if a virus or a hardware problem exist.
We need to use this command to repair the MBR. We are
sure that we have no viruses. But, what do they mean by a
hardware problem? Does a corrupted device driver fall
under hardware problem? Does running FIXMBR under normal
conditions create problems?

Thanks

And Fixboot is usually the command required unless you've been using linux or other external boot loaders.

Fixmbr is not a command to run without reason as it may toss all your data away if the partition table is not spot on.

Thanks for your replies.

The problem we are having is that when we reboot our
Windows 2000 Server (Exchange 2000), we get the following
error at POST screen:

Err 5: Error finding VFLOPPY.SYS
Err 8: Fake floppy driver not found
Press any key to boot active partition.

When I press any key, the machine boots up fine and
everything is working.

We have PowerQuest DeployCenter 5.01 installed and we use
it for cloning. We'd never had this problem on this
machine and were able to successfuly clone it with
DeployCenter. Now, of course, we can't clone it. I am
hoping if anyone is familiar with this issue.

VFLOPPY.SYS is a component of DeployCenter. It is used
for creating Virtual Floppy Disks, that are used for
booting into DeployCenter - which is at DOS. I
uninstalled DeployCenter, and the problem occured again.
I reinstalled it, and the error still appears.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a DeployCenter problem. Perhaps you need to ask PowerQuest?

XP's boot loader intercepts the Dos Boot Record aka Partition Boot Record. Linux's boot loader and those from third parties often intercept the Master Boot Record. The MBR's job is to find the DBR. The DBR's job is to load the boot files off the hard disk to start booting.
