Master boot file

I keep getting a master boot file that is corrupted. I boot off a XP CD and
go into the Repair mode. At a dos prompt , i re[air the master boot file,
reboot the computer. It boots into XP Home oikay.. Then When I reboot it
fails again. I redo the repair and go thru the same scenario over again. I
have ran SFC /scannor, Spybot S&D, AdAware SE, AVG free and none of them
help.. Anyone go anyideas?

Thanks

Thee Master Boot Record, you mean - this is corruptuing regularly? You
might consider that the drive itself is failing, and so also consider
replacing it (drives are not expensive now; I see 160 gig drives for under
CDN$75).

Is your data backed up? If not, now is the time to do so, before the drive
fails completely. Use the current drive as little as possible, because if
it is failing, its usable time is limited.

If you can, disconnect the old drive, install the new one, do a clean
install to the new drive, and once it's all installed, re-connect the old
one as a secondary drive and copy your data. When done, disconnect the
drive again and set it aside till the next time you realize that you didn't
get all the data off it.

What do you mean by "master boot file"? What is the error message, exactly?
What commands do you give to do this "repair"?

In bootitng, there is a master boot file table.

Else, you're speaking of master boot record.

Sounds like guessing game to me.

I keep having to run the FIXBOOT because the boot sector is corrupted

Or is failng and cannot hold data in the MBR any longer. Have you tried
running the manufacturer's drive diags on it? That may point out what's
going on.

PS Or, you have malware the keeps overwriting it. Perhaps you should look
into HiJackThis.

And yet, it is being unreliable. This is not a promising contradiction.
I'd be respecting your experience.

In any case, you should take the view that the drive is demonstrating
unreliability, and back it up completely.

And, strongly consider replacing it. Drives are not expensive or complex
to replace. and the data on it is usually worth far more than the cost of
the drive or the time to rebuild one.

You could spend a lot of time poking at this and maybe never find the
problem... right up to when the drive does finally give out. In the
meantime, you could have been using it productively.
