Marking the moment: Thanks everyone.

Well, I had to take the plunge sooner rather than later, and this is my first
message to this newsgroup using my shining new broadband connection. In the
past the idea of having an 'always-on' internet connection and a fixed IP has
always scared me simply because I didn't know enough about internet security.

But now I'm up and running, with an AVG Internet Security suite that I'm
feeling increasingly confident about after a few initial problems; I have
Defender running in the background as well; I have a whole battery of
reliable back-up scanners installed (A-squared, Superantispyware, AdAware and
Spybot) and a reasonable acquaintance the online scanning and testing
options; and on my journey I've had experience of enough false positives to
have become aware of how to begin to deal with a real threat if I should
encounter one. I'm even in a position to be able to pass some of this on to
other folk who are in the same position as I was six months ago.

I could never have reached this point without the help of all you folks
here. You've been fantastic - unstinting in your help, and ever-patient in
your approach. Thank you.

(In case this appears to have a valedictory tone about it, I should add that
I'm not going to disappear or anything! I just wanted to mark the moment
appropriately.)

Thanks again - I hope you're all rewarded with bulging stockings on
Christmas Eve.
