When I receive files from other people, the end of a paragraph is sometimes
marked with an arrow (like a carriage return sign). Does that behave the same
as the MS paragraph symbol? How can I replace that with the standard
paragraph symbol without having to go through every line? Thanks.

The bent arrow is a line break. You can replace line breaks with paragraph
breaks by replacing ^l (that's a lowercase L) with ^p. For more on
nonprinting characters and what they mean, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.
