Mapping Drive on Home Network

C

Charlie Chapman

Hi All - need a little assistance.

I have a Desktop that is setup on a home network so I can share files and the Internet
with my laptop. I have DSL and a 4-Port Router for the Network. I have Mapped a drive on
the desktop to the laptop and one on the laptop to the desktop (with some assistance!).

Now I've brought a new desktop and need to transfer a large amount of data from the old
desktop to the new. I used the network connection that I use with the laptop and can
access the internet fine via the network. But I can't seem to map the drive on the old
desktop to the new desktop. The old desktop is named "charlie" and the workgroup is
"chapman group". On the new desktop, I named it "charlie-desk" and assign it the
workgroup of "chapman group".

Then on the new desktop, I went to Map Network Drive, chose the drive letter and entered
"\\charlie\E" in an attempt to map drive E to the new desktop, but I keep getting the
error "The network path \\charlie\E could not be found". Apparently, I've missed a step
or something in my process?

Can anyone advise on what I might be doing wrong or am not doing?
Thanks in advance.
Charlie

Hi charlie..
Have u checked the "Share this drive/folder button in the properties?
say if u want to map \\charlie\e, u should first set the e:\ drive shared.
do it like this >> Go to e:\ > right click > properties > look for sharing > checked the Share this folder button > apply > retry mapping from the other sytem...

i assume that you've set the file and print sharing enabled..

see if u can get thru now..

that's it..

Do you have the NWLink IPX/SPX protocol installed on both machines? In my
experience, in the setup you describe, this must be done. To add, just
right click your connection, click Properties/Install, and follow the
prompts.
