Mapped will not reconnect right away

Small network, 2 pc's with w2k, one with win 98. One pc with w2k, after about
6 months w/o any problems, suddenly won't reconnect to mapped drive on the
other w2k machine. When it gets to that point when booting, it just sits
there till you click on cancel.
When you go into win-explorer you see the mapped drive with a red X on it.
As soom as you click on that drive, it's contents show up, and everything is
then OK.
The win98 pc connects w/o a problem.......
I've re-mapped the drive, no change..

**** also, the pc with the drive to be shared has suddenly been giving
message on start in re: to files not being correct.....

When I tried to update to sp-4, it won't finish because the cryptographic
service is not running.... I do not see the cryptographic when I check the
services....
