mapi32.dll in OL2003 is corrupt. Fixmapi does not work

I installed then uninstalled 2007 Beta. Now OL 2003 wont start with the
mapi32 eroor. I tried renaming the mapi32.dll and also running fixmapi, this
did not work. Fixmapi did not start

I had the same trouble - didn't see the message re:remove Outlook, got rid of
all the MAPi stuff, rebooted - picked the machine up out the garden - went to
a restore point, that failed, tried to remove Office, Outlook and everything
else - made sure that there are no MAPI's around - completely stuffed.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - even where to buy a good priced
sledge hammer!

Usually Beta means that software is more or less stable with all the
critical system stuff sorted from Alpha -

Could it be that you installed Outlook 2003 without uninstalling 2007
first? If yes, then MS recommends to do the following:
The best thing to do is uninstall both versions and then install the
version
that you would like to use. If your profile was created with (or
upgraded
to) a newer version of Outlook then you what plan to you use, recreate
your
profile after Outlook is installed.

Try doing it in Windows XP safe mode. Windows XP protects these files from

I fail to see how that is related to this issue.

Also BETA still means BETA as in; don't install on production machines as it
is unsupported software and you could end up reinstalling your entire OS.

Baloney. Read the warnings. Install beta software only in test environments
and consider your data at risk. That's just common sense.

With respect :
The message to remove outlook - says to remove outlook small business
extension - if you ain't got it you can't remove it!
The problem with Beta testing in test scenarios is that they never uncover
real world issues - this was installed after doing all the relevant backups
etc - however, having to contemplate a complete re-format of the system since
: the operating system will not roll-back, the fixes don't work, nor do
repairs nor removal of the application - suggests that these sort of issues
should be picked up well before beta 2. Beta2 is usually the very last stage
to clean up minor issues found on 'real world' machines.

We frequently test software for a range of applications (part of our job) -
and know the risks - and the frustrations. Forums are for helping people and
for the authors to guage what is happening. In large organisations developers
are completely remote from the outside - and so every little helps - even the
frustration.

My system is now working - I had to re-install 2007 beta - it works. I had
to fiddle with the authentication - thanks to whoever posted that. I still
have 2003 on the machine - it wont remove - so it can stay. And I'll put up
with the annoying little boxes about Windows Installer each tiome a window
lights up.

MS thinks the cause of the problem is installing Outlook 2003 without
first removing Outlook 2007. According to MS, Outlook 2003 has no way of
knowing that it needs to remove 2007 before it can install itself. As
those DLLs are in a newer version with 2007, the setup of 2003 won't
overwrite them. Then you get the problem of trying to use 2003 with DLLs
from 2007.
Reading your post, I get the impression that you didn't do that. Can you
please confirm that you fully removed 2007 before reinstalling 2003
(every time you did that)? Even better, could you please post the exact
sequence of installs and uninstalls (if you remember)? I'd like to
provide this to MS so that if you did it in the correct sequence they
can take a good look at their setup program and figure out what is going
wrong.

I don't know if you have tried the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility yet
(http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301) but that might be
able to remove MSI's that you can't get rid off via Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks,

The process was quite straight forward. Ran the download, opened up Excel -
2007 went through the registration process. Went to Outlook and half way
through the autoconfig/migration box - outlook died - just vanished. Opened
Outlook again and it did the same again.
Went to System restore and wound back to before 2007 was downloaded.
Everything seemed fine until I ran up Explorer and the Windows Installation
dialog box (preparing to install message) appeared - and then vanished and
explorer started. Opened up this section and checked what had gone on before.
Went to Outlook 2003 and nothing happened apart from the display of the
Windows Installer message again fololowed by 'This patch package could not be
opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it. or
contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer patch package' .
Now every time I try to do anything with any Office 2003 package I get this
message. I followed the instructions of most of the posts - and removed
everything to do with Mapi32 and MSmapi .. in safe mode, and verified thery
did not exist. Still couldn't do anything with 2003. Tried putting the master
cd in - and the same message was given . Tried removing 2003 completly and
the same message. In the end I re-installed 2007 - which came down from the
server suggestiing the rollback did most of its job. 2007 is now working -
and I must say after the original issues seems to be working well - apart
from the Windows Installer message appearing everytime I start a Microsoft
application. I am also running Explorer Beta - which does the same - but
works well. Being a glutten for punishment I decided to download BCM - seems
to load and goes through the configuration and installation successfully but
does not run - clicking on the BCM folder in the tree results in an error
message saying that it has not been configured correctly - so thats got
removed, which the systyem appears to have done successfully. All I need to
do is find a way to get 2003 off the machine - or re-instate it. To me
messgaes like the ones I see seem to point to un anstable system and a real
failure just round the corner.

Thanks for your time and help

Thanks for the long description!
So you ran system restore instead of uninstalling 2007? Simply
uninstalling would have probably been the better idea.
Did you look at the Windows Installer Clean Utility I pointed out? If
there are any Office 2003 packages left on your computer, you could
probably get rid off them with that.

This worked great for me, but I didn't have to go to safe mode. I just
opened the folder listed below and renamed both the msmapi and mapi files to

then started Outlook 2003.

Much thanks, folks.
