Many ICons turned into default Shortcut box

Many of the icons on my desktop (Word, Excell, Outlook, and Quicken) one day
turned into the little default rectangular box.

To clear and reset icon cache:
Right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Advanced. Now using the
item drop down box, choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. OK all the way out.

Powertoys/Tweak is also an option to repair the icon cache

Suggestion:

To proceed: Go to: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden
File and Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files.

Delete Icon Cache. It is located here:

IconCache.db
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data

To clear and reset icon cache:

Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/Advanced. Use the item
drop box and choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. Ok your way
out.
