Many DVDs will not play

Please can someone help? At some point last year both my DVD ROM and my
DVDRW decided to become picky about which DVDs they will play. Some DVDs
will only work in one drive, which is not always the same one. I have no
problem with CDs. Both drives used to work fine. I haven't made any changes
to the hardware. I have tried installing the firmware from the manufacturer.
I have done a full system recovery. I have the proper codecs installed.
I've installed service pack 2. I've tried uninstalling the drives then
rebooting. Nothing seems to work the drives even have the cheek to say they
are working properly. I've seen this problem posted elswhere by another
person but no one had an answer.

Are you talking about retail DVD's or copied/home-made versions?

John.

I would borrow and test a friend's DVD drive. If it works then you have
to replace your drive - it would be a hardware problem.

It's generally retail DVDs that the problem is with, copies seem to be fine.
I am also having problems with some games that have been copied onto DVDs as
well though.

I haven't tried another DVD ROM as both DVD drives started the same problem
at the same time
