manually add a printer

Using Windows XP and want to add a printer to a new laptop. My husband's
laptop works with the printer, so we know everything is configured
correctly. Now we want to add the printer to our daughter's laptop, but it
is not automatically recognized. How can we find the exact name so that we
can manually enter it and add the printer to her laptop?

How is the printer connected?

- Is the printer connected by USB, sometimes to H's laptop and sometimes
to D's laptop?

- Or is the printer connected to a network and shared for all network users?

- If the printer is shared on a network, is it connected directly to the
network using a print server of some sort, or is it connected directly
to a computer that is then connected to the network?

The printer is directly attached to our desktop and set to be shared over
our home network. I know I can type the exact connection information since
it is not being automatically picked up, but I don't know where to find the
exact information to type into our daughter's add a printer process.

Do you mean that when you run the Add a Printer wizard, tell it you are
connecting a network printer, get to the "Specify a printer" dialog,
click the middle radio button to "Connect to this printer (or
browse...)" and select Next, you don't see the printer listed as a
resource on the networked printer?

Try entering \\server\printer in that middle box, where "server" and
"printer" are found as follows:


On the desktop to which the printer is connected:

1. Right click "My computer" and select properties, and then the
"Computer name" tab. The "full computer" name is what you enter for
"server" above.

2. Go to Printers and Faxes, right click the icon for the printer you
want to share and click Properties. Click the Sharing tab. The radio
button to "share this printer" should be selected. The name in the box
for "share name" is what you enter for "printer" above. It's best if
you keep the share name to 12 simple characters or less, with no spaces.
