Managing partitions

I'm currently setting up a HD for a friend and have used System Commander
(Partition) to set up 1)primary and then two logical along with another
Primary for use with another OS.
The first Primary is 10gb and contains the WIN XP Home OS and is a fresh
install.
The computer will be used by a Father and daughter and what I'm looking for
is how to properly set up the folders so that they each have use of the other
partitions for thier own doc and/or data-music files.

My question is if thier is an online guide on how to properly set up the
system to link the partions to each users info. In other words is thier a
web site that speaks in plain terms how to efficiently set up the PC using
multiple partitions. OR "Partitions for Dummies" .

I have a general understanding and have always used a backup partition
myself, but am vauge in regards to make the folder management ideal using
multiple users.

I have VCOMS System Commander and Partition Magic along with several other
Software dealing with partitions, but am looking for a more "general plain
talk" breakdown of instructions on how to set it up.

Any links to web sites or info would be most appreciated. Again, I am
looking to find info on how to properly use multiple partitioned systems with
multi-user systems in managing folders and files along with making
(C:)Program files available to Specific User accounts (ADMIN-Limited).

What I want to avoid is screwing up the primary (C:) OS Primary drive and
making it easy for back up and restore while providing the 2 users a place to
put thier own files and such etc etc.

The simpler the web site how-to (if one exists) the better, otherwise any
answers please refer me to knowledge base sites that don't assume advance
knowledge (although I'm somewhere between novice and intermediate). Some
sites just seem to skip and generalize the info that I'm looking for.

To confusing a question??????? I'll re-word if needed. Again thanks in

Sounds like youre on youre way on "screwing it up"....Why put parts of xp on
multiple partitions,and/or why have users set files to them.You can use
multiple
partitions and adding "other software" installations to them is ok,but youre
only useing one hd,if another was involved youd be thinking in the right
areas
but with one,wasting youre time...Chk out disk use and set up at
microsoft.com,
try search.
 
Microsoft do NOT recomend moving the entire Documents and Settings
folder to another location, see

It is, how ever possible to move the My Documents (including My Music
ans My Pictures) to another drive using Windows Explorer.

Create their accounts, log in as the Father, right click on the My
Documents folder, click on the Move button, locate where you want the
folder to go and click OK. Repeat for the daughter.
 
You can put the various users "My Documents" folder on Drive D:

By doing this, if you have to restore the Windows partition after a serious
event, you will NOT lose the users documents

First, create a name folder for each user on drive D: Then, open each
folder and create a folder called My Documents (ex: D:\Sue\My Documents and
D:\Bob\My Documents))

Right click on each users "My Documents" (after you have booted into their
respective accounts), go to properties | move. Follow the instructions.
Then, move each persons "My Documents" to their respective folder on drive
D:

I'll never understand why you bother replying to anyones questions. I didn't
see the need to mention a 2cd small back-up HD. As the other replies clearly
saw, I was only trying to properply provide a space for media files and other
personal Documents that would provide ample storage for media files and such,
not trying to break up XP all over the place.

Mental note to self Ignore future replies from "expert"

One question re: your reply... Am I correct in assuming that you don't
reccomend having seperate partitions for media files? If this is not the
case, can these be linked the same way. They both download large amounts of
media(mp3 and such) and I just want to make it easily available yet seperate
from each other. Thanks for your help.
 
One other option to consider, and this takes partitioning to another
level of segmentation. My Docs & Email changes quite frequently.
However, Multimedia is generally pretty static and takes up a good
amount of space. You'll want to backup the My Docs/Email/Add
more often than Multimedia and keep that backup small/easy. If
your hardware is adequate - I'd make a dedicated disk partition
for Multimedia and re-direct each user's My Music, My Pictures
and My Videos to a user based folder on that drive. It's a little more
complicated but makes data management somewhat easier to do.
It also allows you to backup the "Critical" user data stores without
having to backup hundreds or thousands of .Jpg's or .Mp3's.
 
I have 4 drives and 7 partitions. My media files are saved automatically to
D:\My Documents\My Music and D:\My Documents\My Video.

When you move your My Documents, everything within it goes to the new
location - by default.
