manage progams and process

I'm trying to optimize my xp performance. (512 mb ram)
The major problem seems to be that is there too many programs
and processes runing right now, 37 processes and 218 mb free...

I guess I can control that in any way. I've heard about some
freewares that lets you see what is running and manage it...

Can you give me some help or tips?
