Depends...

Bragging rights
Monetary gains
Malicious intent

Take for example a Dialing Trojan that calls on Toll Call offshore.

Take a Keylogger Trojan. It may capture you Credit Card number, username and password.

I stronly suggest viewing the following powerPoint Presentation for additional reasons of
intent.

Greed.

Socially, who are the people doing this?

Spammers, scammers, assorted thieves, and others who see an easy way
to get rich quick but don't think or care about the consequences of
of their actions.
Are there any statistics/ researches?

ATTENTION ALL:

Peter Seiler has posted a GEN-U-INE question, actually relevant
to this group! (Okay, it's a question that's asked WEEKLY, and
the answer easily found by Googling the obvious keywords, but a
question just the same.)

Date and message ID noted, at-the-ready for the next time his
Evil Detractors accuse him of only posting complaints about OT
messages. <snicker>

P.S. Anyone know what "daware" is? Opposite of "niteware",
perhaps? ;-)

Haha! Very funny, Laura, from this *definately* evil detractor! I'd begun to
thing Peter was hoping to understudy 'The Arsehole From Ohio!', but I don't
remember Sooooge posting anything other than 24-carat shite. Oops! Wasn't
supposed to post any more Soooge-bashing here!

with "thing" do you meant "think"? If so, be careful with mistyping
because Laura Fredericks as a lesson-teacher/NG-cop could pick you up.

please show me one same question of the last week here in this NG.
And have in mind that nearly every answer of everybodys question could
be googled. Your "ATTENTION ALL:"... shows obviously that you are
only intereted in OT private flame war. That's all you can. Nevertheless
with your "ATTENTION ALL:" (wrote with capitals!) THX to you producing
more attention to my question.

you are investigating/jumping in only if you can do the only you can
beside OT: flamewar.

oh sorry, mistyped. Should be adware. What is your kombination skill?
Hopefully you do NEVER mistype. Or you are a little
lesson-teacher or something like a NG-cop? Looks like. So you are NOT a
shining example in usenet behavior: critical against posters as me who
remarks extreme quoting behavior and you, flaming because of my
mistyping "daware"/"adware". Laura, oh Lara (sorry Laura) what a NY kid
you are.

Oh, I don't know, Peter. Had a car hit me in the head recently. Probably
explains a lot for a lot of people, if retrospectively!

I *may* have been thinking of Ben Grimm, otoh.
