Making XP forget about an installation attempt

I can not get into safe mode, or safe mode with command prompt,
because of a failed repair installation. When I try to go into
either type of safe mode I get a message saying XP is unable to run
setup in safe mode. When I click on the X in the upper right corner
of the message box, all I get is a blank screen or my computer
reboots.

Is there a way that I can edit or delete a file, or files, so that
XP will not know that I tried to do an install? Thank you in
advance for all replies.
