Making XP CD to do repair install

My PC just came with a recovery disk and, if I understand correctly, this
cannot be used to do a repair install on xp.

In an attempt to better understand xp I have just purchased the MCDST
Windows XP Self Paced Training Kit which came with a 120 day evaluation
version of xp pro sp1.

Is there any reason why I cannot use this CD to make a slipstream cd with
sp2 and use that to do repair installs in future?

It won't work since the Windows XP Product Key that came
with your new PC will not be accepted during a Repair. Your
Product Key will only work with the Recovery disk.

As Carey said.wont work but....
If you look at the partition size of your XP installation and see how much
of that partition is in use by XP then go out and buy another HD of that
size or slightly larger.You can Ghost your present installation onto the new
HD by Hooking it up as a slave drive.After this is done remove the drive and
set it aside.You now have a complete bootable backup of your original drive.

You may not be able to do a repair but you can do a clean install if
you want to. If your XP Pro sp1 is a full legal version of Windows XP
there is no reason why you cannot do a clean install. The problem is
you have to format the hard drive and start from scratch. After you do
the clean install you can use SP2 to update XP.

Thanks for all the replies. I had been hoping that just by having access to
a full version CD I could use that to do repair installs on other folks PCs
that were supplied only with recovery cds. However, it seems that is not
the case. If I understand correctly, if someone has a recovery CD only PC
then any serious problems with corruption of systems files etc can only be
fixed by using the recovery CD with the attendant loss of data and settings.
That seems a great shame. Please let me know if I have misunderstood and
there is some way to repair corrupted system files. (BTW this is theoretical
rather than a case of experiencing actual difficulties at this time.)

Thanks for the other suggestions. In fact, I have a desktop and two laptops
at home so I use acronis true image on al the machines. It is a great
program which makes a boot cd on installation and then makes a compressed
image of the HD which I store on an external HD so it is no bother to
restore a PC if necessary. I backup every 10 days or so on all three
machines. As I said, I was hoping to be able to help out people with
recovery cd systems who do not make adequate backups.

I dont intend to install the evaluation version at all never mind for 120
days. What I wanted to find out was whether it could be used to make a
slipstream cd with sp2 to allow me to do repair installs on other computers.
This has now been answered.

What I dont understand is the point of your post. Clearly lacking in
interpersonal skills, I am glad to know that you count google amonst your
friends ;-)
