Making folders Private???

J

Jeff

I understand that in order to mark a filder "Private" it
must be located in the User Profile folder - which I can
not find - nor can the system wide search. Where exactly
should this User Profile folder be located? If it does not
exist, can I creat one (where?) and then should I be able
to make any subfolders under it Private?

Is your drive formatted NTFS.....it needs to be in order
for the make folders private option to appear.

try HIDEFILES = free
http://www.computerboom.net/download/utilities.html

You have any files or programs that you don't want to share with other or
they contain financial and tax information, passwords, personal letters and
emails, private images, and other confidential or personal data. But
typically, computer files and folders have not security protection so the
best way to protect them is to make files or folders invisible for another's
eyes. Hide Files makes hidden any files and folders (or whole Windows folder
or even all computer disks).

In XP you do have security protection for files and folders. XP pro is even
more secure.
Hiding files or folders is not a way to protect folders as anyone can just
set windows to show all hidden folders.

This program hides the folders in a secure manner.

I dont know of a way to secure files in xp while you are logged in to the
same account.

Also if you boot with linux and mount the NTFS drive you will be able to see
the contents of an XP folder.

It is the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\accountname\
for the account name concerned. It normally includes My Documents, and
the usual thing is to put such folders in that, which the user can see
directly as My Documents on the left panel of Explorer, and which is
the default place for 'Save As'. That then refers to his specific
folder in his profile

Sounds interesting. maybe I'll check it out.

You use security and file permissions. You set them to allow or deny access
per user, on a per folder or per file basis. You can deny access to files
for everyone on the computer except yourself and on one will get in except
your user. In xp home this can only be done from safe mode. In xp pro it can
be done by turning off simple file sharing.
Also if you boot with linux and mount the NTFS drive you will be able
to see the contents of an XP folder.

Well sure. If your advanced enough to be running linux and have physical
access to the computer, then of course your in. Heck, you don't even need to
boot to linux as there are ways around anything on the computer. As long as
you have physical access to it and you know what you're doing. Nothing is
fool proof. Security and permissions will keep those non-experts without
physical access to the machine out just fine.
