can't clear checkbox for making folder private

Under Local sharing and security properties, the checkbox for making the
folder private has been checked but is now greyed out so that it can't be
cleared. In addition, the checkbox under Network sharing and security is also
checked and cannot be cleared, but the checkbox to "allow network users to
change my files" is active and can be checked or cleared.

I think it happened when my daughter set a password for the profile. She
says a window came up when she set the password asking something about file
sharing and she clicked yes.

The folder is c:/Documents and Settings/User, which affects the entire user
profile. The box is not checked at any of the higher levels.

I want these files accessible both locally and on my home network. How can I
fix this?

Thanks.

Thanks. That seems to have worked, although there was no option for "use
simple file sharing" listed in the advanced settings under folder
options/view, so I skipped that step. Hope that's not a problem.

You're welcome.

If you have Windows XP Home Edition installed on your computer
you won't find that entry listed on the View page of Folder
Options. That's because you can't disable Simple File Sharing
in XP Home Edition. You have to start the computer in Safe Mode
in order to access the Security tab of a folder's Properties
sheet.
