making changes to excel file on Windows 2003 small business server

I am using excel in office 2000 and I am unable to make changes to a file and
save it. I have the write permission. I have tried sharing the workbook with
excel and it still didn't work.I can make changes to other office documents
like word files with no problems. I can not understand why it will mot let me
change and save an excel file. Any help anyone can give me will be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you for responding. The error message is this:

Your Changes could not be saved to 'Regular Workbook.xls',but were saved to
a temporary document named '02E26000'. Close the exsisting document, then
open the temporary document and save it under a new name.

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension).

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its
backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will
rename the funny named file to the original's name.

Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus
software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical
problems.

Maybe temporarily disabling the antivirus software would be the easier thing to
test. If that doesn't help, maybe it's a permission problem. (I'd double
check.)

I got it to change a file, but I had to give the modify permission. Does
excel have a problem with just the write permission.

excel needs to rename, delete (maybe), and create a file each time it saves.

So you need to allow all those.
