Making a replacement XP cd

N

nicholas

I am running a legitimate XP pRO W/SP#2, but have lost my original CD that I loaded it with. I
am able to recover my product key from the system.

My question is..Can I make a copy from my I386 files or something else, in the event I have a
catastrophe and must reload XP pro once again?

You can make a copy of the "exact" same retail product (Upgrade or Full
Install) using a friends CD, and use the copy with your install key.

You'd better contac Microsoft in your country/region.
Explain them the situation, tell them your Product key and they will send you
the oCD with XP.

How about a ruling on this one:

You buy a new eMachines computer at Circuit City, and while
you have, and have paid for, Windows XP SP2, you get no XP
CD-ROM, and you even have to burn your own "restore disk" if
you want one.

But suppose you want your own copy of the SP2 CD-ROM so
that, if necessary, you can install a clean copy of Windows
without having to install all the crap that comes with the
computer, or maybe even be able to use the Recovery Console.

Can you order a "replacement" SP2 OEM CD-ROM from Microsoft
and use your install key with it? Or, can you copy your
buddy's SP2 OEM CD-ROM?

In short, is there any way out of Restore Disk Hell short of
actually buying XP again?

The install key supplied to you by eMachines will not work with a burned
copy of any Windows XP CD. It is your license to use the operating system
supplied. If you restore your eMachine using "their" restore CD's, and have
to re-validate for any reason, the key will work.

If you want a ruling, consult a judge.
Since your computer is OEM, Microsoft will not provide you a CD.
Using another OEM CD and your Product Key may not be possible after recent
changes made with Activation.

Your will not get the flexibility of retail with your OEM.
You paid less for your OEM and you are seeing some of the reasons for the
lower cost.
If you want more flexibility, you may need the generic OEM or retail
versions.

If the disk you lost was a Retail version of Windows XP Pro /wSP2 you can
usually use another Retail version of XP Pro /wSP2 with your Product Key.
Carey sent you a link to order a replacement disc. The cost should be
minimal as you do not require a Product Key.

However if XP came preinstalled then contact the manufacturer of your system
as the manufacturer is responsible for the software that came preinstalled.
