Making a PP .exe File -- How?

J

jim evans

I was told today a pptx file can be saved as a .exe file so it will
run on systems that do not have PP installed.

I haven't been able to figure out how to do this.

I don't think I understand that viewer. At first I thought it was a
utility you could take with you that would let you show a PP
presentation -- say, put it on a CD with your pps in case the computer
you're using to show doesn't have PP installed. But, you have to
install the utility?????

Hi Jim,

There is a PowerPoint Viewer for 2007 which you can download for free from
Microsoft which might help.

You will need to use Package for CD to create the basis for the EXE.

The PPT 2007 Viewer that opens PPTX files won't run as a standalone. This is
because it has a compatibility pack component that requires installation.
(The downloadable 2007 Viewer someone gave the link to is essentially just
the 2003 Viewer + the compat pack.) The compat pack is necessary for the
Viewer to be able to open the 2007 PPTX file format.

The 2007 Viewer that ships with PPT 2007 is designed to be used with Package
for CD, so it does not include the compat pack. This Viewer, which is
essentially the 2003 Viewer *without* the compatibility pack, runs as a
standalone. (Because it doesn't have the compat pack component, which
requires installation on the recipient machine.) This means it won't open
the 2007 PPTX file format. When you Package for CD in 2007, your
presentation is "backsaved" to the 97-2003 PPT file format so the Viewer
that runs on the CD can open it. (That also means that things like SmartArt
won't animate, so be sure to test your presentation in the appropriate
Viewer by double-clicking the play.bat file the Package for CD creates when
you package.)

So, that long explanation is why you need to use Package for CD from PPT
2007 to get the right stuff.

Then to create the EXE, you can follow these instructions:
