Making a Bootable CD

B

Barry Brindisi

I have XP Home (Upgrade) and the CD doesn't seem to be
bootable. So, I'd like to make a bootable CD via my CDRW.
There doesn't seem to be an option to do that. I don't
have either Nero or EasyCD Creator by Roxio.

How do I make my CD bootable? I do have a Ghost disk on a
floppy but I need it on my CD-RW so I can back up to
either the 80GB HD or writable CDs. We're talking about
15GB total.

Thanks in advance. This is in preparation for dealing
with a problem on a different thread.

if its a genuine CD then it is bootable, you may have to set the cd
drive as the first boot device in the BIOS

Theres advise on creating boot cds at http://old.bink.nu/bootcd/

Thanks a lot guys! I found out what was likely happening
when booting to the XP Home CD. Apparently, I get a
message, for a brief few seconds, telling me to click on
any keys to boot from CD. If no keys then straight to
HD. It is amazing what you discover when not stressed
out as I was about a year ago when I needed a bootable
CD. Then the HD had NOTHING.

Still, it is nice to just create bootable CDs for stuff
like my antivirus app and other utilities.

The XP CDs are all bootable, so it must be a matter of your machine.
You need to go into its BIOS setup by hitting the appropriate hot key as
you power on, and set the boot order to CD before Hard disk. This may
be an item in a BIOS settings [page (highlight it and PageDn to cycle
round possibilities), or be on a separate Boot page, where you highlight
the drive and then use the number pad + key to push it to the top.
Either way then hit ESC and take 'Exit, saving settings'.

SHould you ever need to make a Bootable CD you would need one of those
third party packages - the inbuilt burning does not provide for it
