make start menu smaller

So many programs came with my Dell comp that when I use the start button, the
programs menu goes off the screen to the right. I have deleted menu choices,
made the icons smaller, changed my font, went to classic style but the
changes are not enough. A solution would also get rid of the annoying "Some
programs cannot be shown" balloon that is always in front of the "run" button
upon opening.
I do not want to change my resolution.
The problem could be solved (possibly) if I could change the border width of
the start menu columns. Is this possible? If not, does anyone have a
suggestion?...thanks...phal

I found a fix for this myself. I right clicked the start menu, properties,
picked start menu instead of classic, advanced, start menu items and selected
scroll programs. It isnt exactly what I wanted, but it got rid of the balloon
and allows me to see all programs... Thanks for looking at my post

Two things

One the width of columns is set by the longest name, so r-click long
ones and remove superfluous wording (eg 'Microsoft' or 'Personal
edition'). Unless you use it simply deleting 'Set Program access and
Defaults' saves a lot of width

Then r-click on Start and take Open All Users. Open Programs and make
some folders in it to become submenus - eg Games; Internet; Anti Virus;
Office. Then drag related items into suitable folders. Repeat at
R-click Start and just Open for items in the menus that are your
Personal ones rather than for everyone
