Make files private and read them from another computer?

hello
In the user accounts options, there is an option to make datas private so
that other users of the computer cannot view the files in the "my documents"
folder.
My question is: if the computer crashes (like a bios crash), can I still
take the hard drive, plug it on another computer, and recover my personal
files?
Thanks

You can always recover non encrypted folders/files [assuming hard drive is
functioning and files were not corrupted/deleted] though you may need to
logon as an administrator and first take ownership of the folder and then
give yourself full control permission. If you are using EFS [XP Pro only]
make sure that you have backups to offline media of your EFS private key in
a password protected .pfx file and ideally have clear text backups on
cdrom/DVD disks. The links below explain more on gaining access to non
encrypted files. --- Steve
