Make a CHKDSK log

RScotti

Hi,
I am having problems with running Chkdsk /F so I am trying to see what Chkdsk does.
I want to see a log from that.
I put in "Chkdsk /F C: > C:\Chkdsk.txt" at the CMD prompt
but all it does is just stop there.

Is there a way to do this?

Hi Joe,
I checked and it wasn't there but probably cause I ran it from the recovery program using Diskpart
than bootcfg /default.
I am going to try it again from just the command prompt.

I am having problems with my HD and may need a replacement and Chkdsk /F doesn't work. When I put that in I just get the
results of Chkdsk (read only) NO /x
A quick 5 second google search provided me with an answer for you. I bet
you've wasted more time than that trying to figure it out. Always google
your issues you'll be amazed at how many others have the same issues. Here
is a link to the answer.

Hi Joe,
I just ran it from the CMD and it still didn't even give the Winlogon item in either Application or System in Event
Viewer.
I have used EV many times and it just gives a short statement. I have never seen a BIG log file or anything else. Only a
short message never something like 65000 KB in size.

AFAIK, there is no log for chkdsk when run from the recovery console.
Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web
site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics.

I don't know what's wrong with your system but on a normally running system
running chkdsk creates a winlogon event in the Applications log in event
viewer.

Hi Rock,
Thanks, I have an OEM computer so the HD's are not from the manufacture. I went to the Western Digital web site and
downloaded their Diagnostic Tools and made a CD I ran the short test and had no errors but it said to backup all my data
before running the long test so I didn't do that.

Hi Rock,
I know I have a problem cause I can't run Chkdsk /F When I run it I only get three options instead of four. If I run
Chkdsk /R it only verifies the five options.
I have notified HP and they are coming next week with a new HD.
