Major XP Problems - Help please!

T

Tayles

On Christmas Day, my laptop, running Windows XP service pack 2,
crashed for no apparent reason. From then on I couldn't get any
further than the Windows loading screen (where the blue line goes back
and forth), before it restarted, saying it could not load. It offered
me Safe mode, last settings that worked etc, but none of these worked.

Using the XP disc I managed to get Windows working again, but now had
a new set of problems. My dial-up networking had vanished and I
started getting Error 711 when I tried to reactivate it. There were
further errors (1068 and 126 I think), when I tried to restart the
required processes in Computer Management.

I tried to repair Windows with the XP disc, but it wouldn't work, so I
borrowed my mum's disc and after calling the Microsoft helpdesk
managed to get this working. Voila! The dial-up networking was back
and I was back online. But then a new set of problems began. The
laptop would not shut down. It would get to "Saving Your Settings" and
then hang. And when I re-started, it would get beyond the initial
loading screen (blue line back and forth) and then the screen would go
blank for about three minutes. Then it would come back to life and get
to the Windows is Loading screen and hang again for another three
minutes.

Since I was running on Service Pack 1 following the repair job,
Windows prompted me to download all the latest updates, including
Service Pack 2. I downloaded and updated and this immediately solved
the slow shutdown issue, but the slow start up remained. To make
matters worse, I had a brand new problem.

Now, when I connect to my broadband, I get a perfectly good connection
with my modem, and for about 30 seconds Internet Explorer works fine
(if a little slow). Then I can't connect to a single website. I've
tried Opera and it can't connect either. I've gone into the command
prompt and pinged a few addresses with success, so I know it's not the
connection. I've run System Restore and I get my internet back, but
the start up and shutdown problems are back.

So this is where I am at the moment: either I run off Service Pack 2
and have no Internet connection or I use the previous version and have
a computer that won't shutdown and takes an age to start up.

I'm at my wits end. Can someone please help??? Thank you.

Thanks,
Russell

Only one random thought: When you re-updated to SP2, that probably turned
on the XP firewall by default. Could that be preventing you from using the
internet?
