I came to the computer one day, tried to use the internet, but it was
excruciatingly slow (cable, usually blazingly fast), so i decided i
should probably restart (hadn't restarted for a few months). Lo and
behold, when it tried to load windows xp (professional) it shows a
blue error screen and immediatly restarts, so i can't even see what
the error is. This has happened to me before (a year back) and i
merely reinstalled windows XP. Well, this time, it won't even let me
do that. I tried restarting with safe mode, and it shows all the dlls
that are being loaded. The LAST dll that the computer attempts to load
is some agp*.dll. And then it freezes and restarts. I havn't been
doing anything for the past 2 months other than chatting, browsing,
and occasional gaming (all the games were there from about 6 months
ago). So, why did it screw up now for no reason? So, i decide, i guess
it's alright if all my files are completely deleted. Just teaches me a
lesson to not... use the computer? So, i try to repair windows XP with
the repair console. It freezes at "checking system startup
environment", or something similar to that. Ok i say, i'll just
completely start over. I do that, get past the disk partitions screen,
and then it screws up on me. The blue screen appears, saying something
to the effect of "Windows has encountered an error, and to prevent
permanent damage, the process has been stopped". Now it's complaining
about some ntfs.dll or some ntfs file. This time it did not immediatly
restart, but the screen merely stayed there. I have no realy
alternative now, because i tried to restart regularly, reinstall
windows, and repair windows probably 5 times each. I probably have to
make a disk to startup the computer in dos mode, but i don't really
remember how to do this. So i guess i have two questions here.
A. Is there ANY way i can keep my hd intact but reinstall windows or
repair windows?
B. What should i do to reinstall windows? How do i make a floppy disk
that will restart in dos?
Thanks for any help.
