Major stability problems on multple machines - PLEASE HELP

S

Scott

This is becoming a serious problem for us, any and all help is greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance.

Our domain has been running fine for the longest time. About 10 months ago 1 user started experiencing problems with all major applications (word, excel, outlook etc) "outlook(word, excel, etc).exe has generated and error and will be closed". I reloaded her system, replaced the system and deleted and re-created her profile all multiple times and in multiple combinations (reload and delete profile etc) as well as switched network jacks and added a new APC for her machine to run off of. There's no interference from any devices local as there are no devices around it (cept for the monitor and I swapped that too). She still has the same problems.

Now in the last few weeks almost everyone (60+ users) are expereincing the same problems, even my machine is doing it and its becoming more and more frequent every day. The systems are all Windows2000 Pro SP3 & two newly loaded machines that have SP4 (except mine which is XP Pro SP1). Windows2000 domain, all servers on SP3 and no errors on the servers at all. Office version is 2000 Pro SP2. Nothing has changed on the network at all, no software deployements, no upgrades, nothing. We have Symantec Corporate edition 8.0 (with most recent updates) and VNC on all machines as well as Acrobat reader 5.5 and winzip, were also behind a PIX 515 Firewall. I just loaded a system fresh yesterday for a new employee, default windows2000 load and office install via our RIS server image and office Image deployment policy in GPO (the images have not changed either, they are about 2 years old). This system started having these problems with in hours of being used by the user yet never once gave me a problem loading it.

The problems occur at all sorts of different times and can usually be replicated on the machine it occurs on but not other machines. One user who trys to shift cells in excel gets this error where as the same actions on the same document on any other machine does not have this result. Another user that clicks the task button on the outlook shortcut bar experiences this problem (these are the error events I provide below), another user has this problem when she scrolls through her contacts from the "To:" button in outlook. I have this problem when I copy a large html link (5 lines or more) into word and then try to type anything else into the document. These are just a few of the examples, no two problems are alike and at least half of my users are having this problem.

I'm stumped - Anyone?

The errors everyone is getting are just like the following two, but happen in all office applications.

You will probably want to scan each machine for viruses using Norton
Antivirus or McAfee Viruscan, if you haven't already. Hopefully you
don't have any machines with their entire C drive shared, either, with
write access. You might also ask yourself what has been changed on all
of the systems at about the same time that the problems started popping
up, and go from there.

Well, since you asked for anyone's suggestions, here goes:

What happens if you try to run these applications locally---without
logging on to a domain? Is it possible the domain server is messing
with you somehow? If there are any shared folders or mapped drives you
may want to disconnect them also.

It is highly unlikely all these machines are experiencing similar
problems without something in common. Most likely causes would be
viruses (including trojans or worms), similar hardware that is faulty,
network connections, Group Policies, etc.
