major problems after installing flight simulator!

I've installed FS2002, run it a couple of times with no probs but now every
time I start it it causes the pc to restart. Not only that, but since then
virtually every other game installed on my pc -Halo, Myst Revelation to name
a few- does the same! All these games run fine until now, but the only ones
still working are Splinter Cell and Symcity4. I've tried following every tip
suggested by Peter S. (unistalled and updated the display drivers in safe
mode, uninstalled and reinstalled the games, which incidentally run fine
immediately following installation, but only once. I repeat all my games run
perfectly prior to installing FS2002, and my system -1.2GHz duron, Nvidia
Geforce 2 64Mb, 384MB Ram, XP O. S. is more than capable of running these
games. What the heck happened?!? Thanks for every, very much appreciated,
suggestions!

Hi Paolo,

Your system is most likely restarting as a result of a STOP error.
This might have been caused by the DX update when you installed FS.

To stop this behavior go to Control Panel / System / Advanced /
Click the Startup and Recovery Settings button / Uncheck the box
labelled "Automatically restart" under the System Failure section.

To analyze the error, try the steps in: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

If the error indicates a file name that begins with ati, or nv (nVidia)
the most likely solution would be to install the latest drivers using
the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

Thanks Jimmy (sorry for getting your name wrong in my previous post BTW). As
I said I've already tried doing what you suggested in other threads, e.g.
unistalled and re-installed the video drivers, but no joy. I've disabled auto
restart and I got a 0x0000008E stop message but no reference whatsoever to
the display driver? You mentioned DX update during FS installation, what does
that mean? Can it be reverted?

Hi Paolo,

Don't worry about calling me Peter..
... I'm sure I've been called worst (behind my back). :)

Did you follow the steps in my driver update instructions to the 'T'?
Perhaps a skipped step or an overlooked troubleshooting suggestion
will solve the issue. If you're sure you did, I trust you to your word,
so we'll run a DX diagnostic to hopefully expose the problem.

In order to Create a dxdiag.txt file: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
Afterwards click the "Save All Information..." button in the bottom row.

To post the DX diagnostic information, open the file in notepad, click Edit
/ Select All / Copy and then Paste the data into your post using Ctrl+V. If
you use Outlook Express Click Insert / File Attachment. I hope this helps!

Thanks for your time and advice, I really appreciate it!

Hi Paolo,

I read your DX Diagnostics and everything looks fine. You passed all the
tests including sound (less the microphone of course). The driver for your
Geforce is recent. I notice you haven't installed SP 2 yet. It might help.

1. The one thing that concerns me is your RAM. 384 MB indicates that you
have more than one stick. That could be causing a conflict since they are
not evenly matched. Remove the smaller stick to see if that resolves it.

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
