Major IE problem - can't download anything!

R

Rich Emmerson

I can surf the net fine, but when I try to download
anything from the internet at all I get the same message
each time:

"Internet Explorer cannot download [name of file] from
[website location]"

"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet
site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot
be found. Please try again later".

However, I have to stress this happens on EVERY download
I try - I've rang my ISP provider and they say the signal
is fine (and the speed of the websites loading indicates
that this is true).

I've reinstalled Windows XP to make sure the files are
kosher but I still get the same problem.

Can anyone help me? This is really annoying as I can't do
anything other than look - and also this is interfering
with my Windows Updates as I can't get anything from this
either!

Best regards

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your posting here.

Please try the Ramesh's suggestion first.

If the problem still persists, please empty out all the contents of the
TEMP folder in your user's profile. For example:

c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\TEMP

Reboot computer and try to download in Internet Explorer again.

Hope the information helps.

Have you ever been able to resolve this problem? I have recently started
having the same situation and tried all the fixes posted with absolutely no
results. Problem also affects Media Player 9, and I would expect that
they're tied together somehow.

HELP!!!!!! ANYONE!!!!!!
and Thanks,

Hi Rich,

What is the detailed error message you get?
Does the problem occur on all the web sites or just some certain links?
Would you please show me a link with problem?
Whis is your operation system?

In addition, it will be better that you send a new post about this issue so
that we can find it easily.

Thank you,

I Too have the same problem. I cannot download anything! Windows Update proceeds normal up untill you select Install Updates. Then it pops up with a download/install progress window. But The download never starts. When you select cancel It closes I.E. and prompts me to send an error mesage to Microsoft. It also does the same for any other files I try, ( I.E. .TXT .EXE .PDF All forms of downloads). The Computer is running win98se and I.E. 6.0 SP1. I Have another computer running WIN XP Pro, I.E. 6.0 Sp1 on the same cable modem It has no problems at all. Any Hel p Would Be greatfull.

Hi Jacob,

To check the download problem, I have the following suggestions for your
reference.

1. If you have enabled the antivirus software, please temporarily disable
it and then test.

2. Delete the Temporary IE files in your Windows 98 system. To do this:

- Click Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt.

- Type the following command line and press enter after each line.

Cd\

Cd windows

deltree tempor~1

deltree downlo~1

3. Disable the third party extensions. To do this:

- Launch IE

- Click the Tools menu and then choose Internet Options

- Click the Advanced tab

- Clear the check mark for "Enable third-party browser extensions"

- Click Apply. Click OK. Restart the computer

If the problem still perissts, it will be better that you send a new post
about this issue so that we can find it easily.

Thank you,
