Major burner problem - HELP!

I have a notebook with a QSI DVD +-RW SDW 082S dvd burner - which has worked
perfect for a year and a half now. But now something strange has happened:

Sometimes when i insert a DVD or CD - the computer reports the disc being
empty - even though it clearly is not...

I recently tried to burn more divx files onto a dvd which I already had
burned a couple of divx movies onto. But the computer reports that the disc
is empty - even though I have burned films onto the disc with the same
computer and burner (and I have also watched the films on a desktop dvd
player - so I know that they are on the disc).

I also have problems burning some iso files. I choose "burn image", chooses
the appropriate iso file, burns it (burns as normal - reporting successfull
burning) - but when I open the CD afterwards - the computer reports disc
being empty!

I have scanned my systems for malware/virus with both Xoftspy and latest
definitions from Norman antivirus - but the problem wont go away.

I have NOT installed any software using Starforce copy protection (which is
known for creating CD/DVD problems). I even ran starforce remover just to be
sure - but it couldnt find anything.

I'm using Verbatim high grade media - I have tried burning on every speed
from 1x up to max - and the discs can be read by other systems - but not
mine....

Has my burner died - or could this be some strange kind of malware - or
something else? Please - is there anybody out there who can explain what
has happened - and have a solution to this strange problem.

This is VERY frustrating and confusing...

What happened?

I don't think the Burner is defect. Otherwise, the Disc couldn't
be used in other Computers. For me it seems you've got yourself
some Kind of Virus/Malware/whatever.

You cold use a Bootdisk with CD-ROM Support and test this Theory.

If I understand your note your laptop can burn DVDs correctly but
cannnot read them
which makes me think that the drivers for the OS could be corrupted.

You didn't say what OS is installed, but assuming it's Windows XP, you
could try to remove and reinstall the device from Device Manager.

Warning: if you're not comfortable doing this ask a more knowledgeable
friend or a computer technician to assist you.
