Maintaining formatting in numbered lists

I'm using Word 2003 to create a document with a lot of numbered lists. I've
modified the first-level list number style to have a .25" indent (the dreaded
'Automatically update' checkbox is NOT checked). When I apply the style to my
second numbered list and restart the numbering, the numbering works fine but
the indent resets to 0". Short of applying direct formatting to dozens of
numbered lists, how can I restart the numbering for each list and still
maintain the indent I need?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

If the indentation is affected when you restart the numbering, first make
sure that you specified the indentation in the numbering options, not in the
Paragraph dialog box (this is a known issue, although it should be less of a
problem in recent versions of Word). If that doesn't help, try a different
method to restart numbering. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/listrestartmethods.htm.

Hi, Stefan--

Your post put me on the right track. When I went in to look at the style
initially (clicking where the '1. List number' style appears in the Pick
formatting to apply window on the Styles and Formatting pane), it WAS showing
my .25" indent. Then I applied the style to my second numbered list and
restarted the numbering, and--sure enough--my indent disappeared. So, with
the text still highlighted, I clicked where the '1. List Number' style
appears in the Formatting of selected text box (at the top of the Styles and
Formatting pane) and selected Modify > Format > Numbering > Customize. For
whatever reason, the Customized Numbered List dialog box showed a 0" indent.
I made the change, and everything now seems to be working as needed.

Thanks again for all your help...
