Main Boot Record corrupt ?

Hi, After at attempt to upgrade from Win XP Home to Professional, I'm really
stuck.
On boot it says "No operating system"
Tried Repair from the Installdisk, but doesn't help. The files are there and
everything else seems OK. A friend says the MBR may have been destroyed.
I've tried FDISK /mbr but the FDISK file isn't found (and on this new PC I
don't have even a floppy (only memory card readers which seems to be
available in DOS (?).

Should the FDISK be somewhere on the C-drive, or are there any other way to
restore MBR without formatting disk?

I try that, and nothing seems to happen, thecommend prompt reappears in one
second.

When the console initiates, I select partition number 3 (C:\Windows) and get
the prompt.
Same result if I try only the command fixmbr or
- fixmbr c:\windows or
- fixmbr
The harddrive lamp doesn't indicate any disc activity.

You have to type "fixmbr" from Recovery Console.

Try this, type:

fixmbr
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild

When using the fixmbr command, type the command like this:
fixmbr device name (ex, fixmbr \device\harddisk2)

Well, the procedure seemed to respond without errors, but on reboot I still
get the immediate black screen with "Error loading operating system"
(norwegian text translated).
On the bootcfg, I get 3 question, any advice on specific answers ?

A.

Try this, type:

fixmbr
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild
