mailto

When I first installed Vista I couldn't get the Mail to work. After beating
my head against the wall for over a week I bit the bullet and had to
reinstall Vista. So now a least I can receive and sent mail. But a new
problem has popped up.

Every time I try to open a mailto link it tells me the default client wasn't
installed correctly and then opens 35 windows.
Which of course shots the pc down. Doesn't Microsoft have anyone working
there that can solve these stupid email problems

I appreciate the effort but I don't have a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto in my
registry. Also the link looks like it is for XP and not Vista. I don't know
if this helps but every time I go to mail it tells me that it is not set as
the default. I have set it as default many times but it doesn't seem to make
any difference. Again thanks

Thanks a ton for that. It stopped the windows opening. I still can't use
mailto because it comes up and say the default client isn't properly
installed. I've been beating my head against the wall for 2 weeks now about
this. As I mentioned before it looks like the link you gave me is for XP so
it's not exact. I've tried changing permissions etc. but so far it hasn't
worked. Again thanks.

Go to Control Panel | Default programs and make WinMail default. If that
doesn't fix the problem, then go to Start | Search and paste the line below
into the window and hit return:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" OCInstallReinstallOE

I tried pasting the line but it tells me it can't find C:\Program. I pasted
the whole line --C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe"
OCInstallReinstallOE--. I don't know if that was correct. Thanks

Did you leave out the quote marks before C?
I pasted > the whole line --C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe"
OCInstallReinstallOE
It should be: "C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" OCInstallReinstallOE

Yes, like an idiot I did. So I repasted and I'm in business. Thanks to
everyone for the help!!!

Try the following one more time, and if that doesn't fix it,
wait for Microsoft to release the replacement for Windows Mail
in the next few days.
Go to Default Programs, which you can reach either from the
Start menu or the Control Panel,
then click the first item: "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds a list of programs comes up.
Click on Windows Mail. To the right you should then see
"This program has all its defaults."
If it has less than all of its defaults, fix it by selecting one
of the two options indicated by green arrows.

It says it has all it's defaults. I am wondering why it says Windows Mail
(News). In the box on the right it says, "Windows Mail (News) is your
preferred software for managing your newsgroups." Is that standard? Thanks

You should see separate listings for "Windows Mail" and for
"Windows Mail (News)".

I don't have separate lines just one line.Windows Mail(news) and
In the box on the right it says, "Windows Mail(News) is your preferred
software for managing your newsgroups."
So I'm guessing that I need what ever Microsoft is going to be putting out
to fix this mess. Does anyone know
when they are going to fix it. Thanks

According to the press release issued three weeks ago, Windows
Live Mail is scheduled to be released for download by the end
of this month.

Try this one:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" OCInstallUserConfigOE

with the quotes.

Same result. Thanks for the effort. If what I am reading is correct I should
have a Windows Mail and don't. I just have a Windows Mail(News). So I still
can't use mailto and keep getting the "default client not installed
properly".
My big question since I can't fix this is "Do we believe Microsoft will be
coming out with a fix soon"?
Again thanks to all for the suggestions.

Hi,

Try this REG file:
http://www.winhelponline.com/fixes/mailclients.reg
It should restore the Windows Mail entry to Default programs.

A fix for Windows Mail? Not soon, maybe later this year.
However, Windows Live Mail, which has been touted as a
replacement for Windows Mail is scheduled to be released
in the next few days.

Sorry that didn't work either. Same results. Thanks
