I am having a problem with this and all the easy answers don't help.
Whenever I click on a mailto link it gives an error "could not perform this
operation because the default mail client is not properly installed". I have
checked ALL the things I have found and it is the default mail client. Any
help out there???

Just because Windows Mail is designated as your default mail client
does not guarantee that all default protocols have been assigned.
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Gary,
I have done this, and it states this program has all its defaults, but still
will not function. Anything else??

Try this alternate method of setting defaults.
The following procedure will rewrite the default protocol
assignments in the registry:
Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and
select "Windows Mail". Click OK. Reboot Windows.
