Default Mail Client not Properly Installed (Mailto Protocol)

HTML Document

Hi,
My problem is I'm missing the Mailto Protocol.
I have searched all messages for a solution to my problem and see that the
problem is a missing registry key. Merseymike fixed his problem but never
posted the answser.
Open the Default Programs applet.
Click "Set program access and computer defaults."
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail.
Click OK.
Above, does not work. When I go to the Default Programs, it tells me
Windows Mail has all its defaults.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to add the Mailto protocol ?
All I want to be able to do is the send an email via the web without getting
this error: "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client
is not properly installed".
Thanks so much !

If you go to "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" in Default
Programs, does MAILTO appear in the list of protocols?

Incorrect registry permissions are causing the problem.

Hi Ramesh,

I followed the instructions but no luck. The MAILTO protocol is still not
in the protocol list. How in the world can I get it listed there?

Also, for the below:
Taking ownership of the mailto key and sub-keys

Start Regedit.exe and navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\mailto

On the Edit menu, click Permissions
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab
Under Change owner to, click the new owner (your user account)
Place a checkmark near Replace owner on subcontainers and objects
Click OK

The check mark will not stay there. I do an APPLY and an OK , but it
disappears.
Any other ideas Ramesh?
I appreciate your help.

Well, for Setting Permissions for the mailto key, I went ahead and added
CREATOR OWNER with Full Control that was missing ...I then did a RESTART and
lo and behold, my computer would not start up...not even after an automatic
repair. Thankfully, an option for System Restore was available and I went
ahead and did a RESTORE. I have calmed down, but I have to ask...what does
it take to add MAILTO to my list of Protocols? This is unbelievable all that
I have gone thru just to be able to send an email via the web. That's all I
want...why is this so difficult? I have done nothing to have caused this
problem. I just want it fixed. I see other people in this group have
resolved this issue. Why can't I ????
I would greatly appreciate any help ......

Sometimes toggling the default email program will restore a missing
MailTo protocol. Try this:
Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and
select some other email program besides Windows Mail. Click OK.
Then go back and select Windows Mail.

WOW, thanks Gary, that fixed it !! MAILTO is now in the protocol list. I
can't thank you enough. What a simple solution. You are the man !!

I noticed something odd. What I did, was select Outlook for my default
email program. I then went to check thr protocols and lo and behold, there
was MAILTO, but there were also other protocols that appeared. OUTLOOKFEED,
OUTLOOKFEEDS AND STSSYNC. OUTLOOK has caused me so many problems....and it
got me again !!
Anyway, I am very happy and I thank everyone for their help. I can now send
web support and cust serv emails. YAY !!

Hi,
My problem is I'm missing the Mailto Protocol.
I have searched all messages for a solution to my problem and see
that
the
problem is a missing registry key. Merseymike fixed his problem
but
never
posted the answser.
Open the Default Programs applet.
Click "Set program access and computer defaults."
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail.
Click OK.
Above, does not work. When I go to the Default Programs, it
tells
me
Windows Mail has all its defaults.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to add the Mailto
protocol
?
All I want to be able to do is the send an email via the web
without
getting
this error: "Could not perform this operation because the default
mail
client
is not properly installed".
Thanks so much !

Interesting! You indicated in your original post that the "Set program
access and computer defaults." method did not help.

What I'm thinking is that altering/fixing the mailto permissions made it
possible for "Default Programs" to recreate the missing "mailto" branch.

Try the other option first:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

With the 1st option under “Programs†I only have “Windows Mail (News)†and it
says “Windows Mail (News) is your preferred software for managing your
newsgroups.†Below it says “This program has all it’s defaultsâ€. Also, in
Windows Mail/Tools/Options/General it says “This application is NOT the
default MAIL handlerâ€. I then click “Make Defaultâ€/Apply/OK and when I reopen
Tools/Options/General it again says “This application is NOT the default MAIL
handlerâ€. Any other suggestions?

Try the other option first:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

for Choose a default e-mail program is "use my current e-mail program". Do
you have any other suggestions?

You're very welcome.
Sometimes it takes that toggling of the default email program selection
to force Vista to rewrite the protocol entries in the registry.

YAY !!

Hi Ramesh, no error message that I know of. I have a Vista Home Premium
64-bit machine. From what I can see, and I am not an expert by any
means......I am missing the MAILTO protocol in the protocol list located
under Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Specific Program. I have FTP,
HTTP, HTTPS, LDAP, MMS, NEWS, NNTP, SEARCH, SNEWS. But no MAILTO. How can I
get this protocol in the list?
Thanks for your help,
Eileen

Hi Eileen,

Fixing mailto key permissions helps in most cases. No idea why it does not
work in your case.

my computer would not start up...not even after an automatic repair.

Was there an error message?

Well, for Setting Permissions for the mailto key, I went ahead and added
CREATOR OWNER with Full Control that was missing ...I then did a RESTART
and
lo and behold, my computer would not start up...not even after an
automatic
repair. Thankfully, an option for System Restore was available and I went
ahead and did a RESTORE. I have calmed down, but I have to ask...what
does
it take to add MAILTO to my list of Protocols? This is unbelievable all
that
I have gone thru just to be able to send an email via the web. That's all
I
want...why is this so difficult? I have done nothing to have caused this
problem. I just want it fixed. I see other people in this group have
resolved this issue. Why can't I ????
I would greatly appreciate any help ......

Hi Eileen,

The check mark will not stay there.

That's fine. See if you're able to access the mailto branch. If not, see
"Setting the Permissions for the mailto key" in the link I posted
earlier.

Hi Ramesh,

I followed the instructions but no luck. The MAILTO protocol is still
not
in the protocol list.

Eileen

:

Incorrect registry permissions are causing the problem.

See sections "Unable to access the "mailto" branch?" and "Setting the
Permissions for the mailto key" in this page:

Very strange! In Default Programs you should have two entries for
Windows Mail, one being the "(News)" one that you do have. Try
registering Windows Mail with the operating system. Click Start,
then type
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /reg
and press Enter.
Restart Windows, then repeat that Default Programs procedure below.
