mailto: launches 50+ IE windows

I've got a default and clean installation of Vista Business with Office 2007
std. I'm a Windows Mail user. Since links to addresses lauched Outlook, I
changed Office to removed Oulook and set Windows Mail to defaults which
include mailto: After doing so, address links within Windows Mail lauch IE
with an error "program default not configured". When I acknowledge the
error, 50+ IE windows open up within seconds and I'm informed that "Windows
is running slow" (duh). Any suggestions?

Check that WinMail is default via Control Panel | Default Programs. See if
that fixes it.

Thanks Steve, but the mailto association to Windows Mail seems to be set
correctly. I did try clearing that, saving, and resetting to no avail.

This happened to me. Change it to another default
email program. Then, change it back.

Okay, let's do it in the registry.

Go to this registry key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

and put in this:

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /mailurl:"%1"

copy and paste it as the (Default) value.

see if that fixes it.

Stupid Vista -- have to use registry fixes now.

I had this same problem with MAILTO link creating dozens of explorer
windows. When looking at the registry I found that the entire key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAILTO was gone ! Ouch ...probably related to
install of trial MS OFFICE 2007 (Outlook 2007) and subsequent
deinstall.

Fortunately I was able to export the key from another Vista machine
and import on the failing PC

All is well now, links via MAILTO are working :)

Did you go to Control Panel | Default Programs and make sure Windows Mail
has all its defaults?

These instructions are for WinXP, but they should work for Vista:
Multiple browser windows open when you click on a mailto: link:

yes I did
also, I've gone to Windows Mail/Tools/Options and click the Make Default
button to make Mail the default Mail handler. After Apply/OK I can go back to
Tools/Options and Mail is still shown as "NOT" the default handler

Mailto: links, and the Email function in the Pictures viewer do not work.

From reading other responses it seems that the Registry has lost an entry,
probably related to me installing then de-installing an old version of Office.

I've seen registry fixes for XP but not being a registry expert I am
cautious to implement these.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The only fix right now is to perform the registry changes to the mailto key.

Go to Start | Search and type regedit.

Then read the help file on how to use it and backup before you make changes.

This key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

The (Default) value is

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /mailurl:"%1"

That should fix it.
