mailmerge maximum field size

I am using Excel 2003 and Word 2003, taking data from Excel to Word to create
a document using Word mailmerge standard routines.
Some Excel cells containgn text data and it appeasr that when transferring
the data to Word, it becomes truncated if more than 256 characters. However
this truncation does not seem to be consistent as 300+ characters sometimes
transfers
so:-
1) are there actual field length limitations?
2) if so what are they?
3) is there some wotk arouund other than spreading daat across a number of
Excel cells?

Do you find that the difference (sometimes truncated, sometimes not) is when the
sending workbook is open?

It appears to make no difference. To clarify - in the same merge operation,
one field moves across complete. The next field, in the adjacent (right) cell
only moves over 255 (256th ch is a space). Both Excel fields are formatted
the same (general). The first has 744ch and the second 678ch.
