My mail system is locked up. Can not receive or send emails. When I click
onto an item the hour glass is the only thing that showes. I use windows xp
outlet express.
Thanks for your help.

Have you checked your POP3 settings for you email account.
Tools/Accounts/Mail tab/Properties button/Servers tab
You should have entries for incoming mail similar to: mail.comcast.net
and outgoing mail similar to smtp.comcast.net

I am what you would call computer illiterate. Can you walk me through what
you posted? Thanks
Charlie

Start Outlook Express.
On the Tool Bar menu (located at the top) you should see a menu (File, Edit,
View, Tools, Message, Help)
Click on 'Tools' and in the drop down list select 'Accounts'.
In the 'Internet Account' windows, click on the 'Mail' tab and then click on
your email account name.
Next click on the 'Properties' button.
In the 'Properties' window you should see a tab named 'Servers', click on
the Servers tab.
Now you should see your Server Information settings (3 fields)
List in your reply what these fields contain.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
