I am running Vista Home Premium with SP1 and constantly get a failure
whenever Windows Mail attempts its periodic default compaction of the mail
store.

The compaction stalls midway and mail shuts down. I then get a data
execution prevention icon in the system tray.

I have tried the following, all without success:

Turned off email virus scanning by my AVG antivirus and then reinstalled
mail accounts.

Done a complete "reset" of Windows Mail as outlined on the Vista64 forums.

Used the WMutil application available at oehelp.com. For what it's worth,
the "compact database" option with this utility appears to run to
completion, but compaction still stalls when run from within Windows Mail
directly.

Is there any solution to this other than to turn off compaction or set the
usage interval to some value well beyond the default 100?

It means nothing to me, but here is the detail shown when compaction fails:

Try uninstalling AVG. It may not be completely disabled. Otherwise, I'd
ignore it. You can change the Compact check count value in the registry or
just change the prompt number under Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance
so that you don't get prompted. The only thing being compacted is the
database, so there are no messages involved.

Steve and Greg:

Thanks for your responses. Here is what I have done since my original post:

Uninstalled AVG completely. Windows Mail still stalls during the compaction
process.

Downloaded the most recent version of AVG and installed it WITHOUT
installing the email scanning module. Windows Mail still stalls during the
compaction process.

The only change from yesterday's behavior is that Window Mail now cannot
even complete its automatic restart following the compaction failure. I get
another error message stating that Windows Mail cannot restart because
msoe.dll cannot be found. However, Windows Mail can be restarted manually
through my standard desktop icon.

So, my choices appear to be to go with Live Mail or completely turn off
compaction through the maintenance option. I have taken the latter course
for the time being.

I used Outlook Express successfully for more than 10 years and regret that
MS felt compelled to go with the new application.

Mail is yet another reason why I feel Vista is in fact a step backward from
XP2. I am also having apparently unresolvable issues with file management,
folder view settings, post-boot drive activity, slower application opening,
and peculiar recycle bin behavior.

Yeah, well some of us fought hard to get improvements in OE and later
WinMail. You can see the result.
