problem when closing

When I close the Windows Mail program, it prompts me with:
"Windows Mail can compact the message store. This may take up to a few
minutes. OK or Cancel"
When I click OK, then:
"Compacting the Windows Mail database" message appears, but a few seconds
later when the progress bar is about 50% done, the following message
appears:
"Windows Mail has stopped working."
And then:
"Check online for a solution and restart the program" or "Restart the
program."
Clicking on Problem Details reveals the following explanations:
Problem signature:

And then a popup appears with the following message:
"Windows Mail was closed. To help protect your computer, Data Execution
Prevention has closed Windows Mail. Click to learn more."
When I click Cancel to the very first prompt , Windows Mail shuts down with
no problems.

Hello Gary,

I have the same problem. And even after trying the WMUtil, it won't go
away. As this appears to be volume related, do you have any other
suggestions?

Sounds like the Windows Mail Message Store has been corrupted.
One way to fix it is to delete the entire Windows Mail directory
(C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail).
Next time you start Windows Mail it will regenerate all the standard
folders, but your stored emails will be gone. If there is anything valuable
in there, you may want to save a copy of the Windows Mail directory
before you delete it.

Hello Gary:

I thank you very much of your suggestion regarding the compact message in WM
pop up window. I encounter the same problem, and have spent several days
chatting with HP tenical support without getting any explanations of the
source of the problem and its solution. I want to copy the entire MS
directory in Program Files and then delete it as you have suggested, but how
to get my mails back into WM after MS is re-installed. I have tried exporting
the mails but only get as far as selecting the export format and then could
not go any further. Your suggestion is very much appreciated.

For your information, a few years ago, I have exported my old mails in eml
file format, and after openning about a hundred of these old mail, the same
pop up window will appear every time I open an old mail. It means every time
I close the old mail is the same as closing the MS.

Thank you again.

Please note that I did not suggest deleting anything in Program Files!

The advice you quoted is several months old. A better solution exists now.
Install the new Windows Live Mail program, and it will automatically
import all your emails and settings from Windows Mail.

Hello Gary:

Thank you for your reply. I look into MS web and can't find any download for
"windows live mail", can you tell me where to find it. I am now having a new
problem. The WM can't access my address book or contacts, it gives me error
"unable to choose receipients". What should I do.

by accident I found that I can get around the pop up window for asking to
compact the email by doing the following on the MS: tool; options; Advanced;
Maintenance and there is a selection "Compact the database on shutdown every
100 runs", I simply change the 100 to 999.

Thank again for your help.

You can move the entire message store to a directory under Documents, so
that there is no longer anything under the Windows Mail directory (not in
Program files -- see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm) Once the message store
is blank, then start WinMail and then make sure its working properly. Then
you can try File | Import | Messages and point to the directory to which you
moved the old message store, or you can open the individual subdirectories
under Local Folders and drag the eml files overtop a WinMail message list
and drop them to reincorporate them into WinMail.

I'm not a computer person. Is there an easy way to stop this message from
appearing on my screen?

I have just found what has to be the easiest solution to this annoying problem.

Just follow the route suggested ie tools options advanced maintenance and
simply remove the tick from the compact messages rubbish and then the
annoying little window goes away permanently

And why would one want to NEVER compact the database?

Don't you think that might lead to corruption later. Mine is set to compact
after every time I close Win Mail and I have had NONE of the several and
frequent Win Mail problems. The compaction process takes about 20 seconds for
me.
