MSMail can't compact messages - problem not solved

W

Will B. Dunne

Windows mail keeps trying to compact the the files when I close the program.
It keeps trying and I get errors. How is this fixed? It's the most annoying
thing as it doesn't
quit, if I click OK - I get another error. How do I get it to compact the
news/mail
files? Never had this problem with OE

I used this www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/ to compact and repair the database - it
said it compressed it, but did not. WMail is still trying to compess the
data base every time I close the program. How is this fixed once and for
all? I'm also getting a little window pop up from the bottom bar saying
"Data Execution Prevention closed Windows?"
What the hell is "Data Execution Prevention?"

Disable all running programs after a reboot. Then start Winmail and then
close it and let it compact. See if then it will run to completion. WMUtil
will compact (not compress) the database, but the registry settings are what
is triggering the prompt to compact and those have to be reset. If it still
won't finish the compaction then you can set the registry value "Compact
Check Count" to zero under this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail

Also check for 3rd party program interference that could be causing this.

That is correct, installing WLM won't fix an issue with WinMail.

Hi, Steve.
Also check for 3rd party program interference that could be causing this.
see point 3 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In the Windows Mail for Vista box there in Point 3, maybe you should add the
warning that removing a Mail Account in WM will also remove all the
previously-downloaded folders for that account. :>( This has taken many
users by surprise and they've lost their messages in their Inbox, Sent
Items, etc. They should move all messages they want to keep into Storage
Folders before removing the account. (Maybe you have that warning
elsewhere, but I didn't see it in a quick look.)

Windows Mail (WM) or Windows Live Mail (WLM)?
It is unlikely that upgrading to Windows Live Mail would
inherit the same WM error since WLM rebuilds the
message store from scratch.

Hi, Gary.

Oh. I haven't used WM in several months and have forgotten most of the
differences between WM and WLM.

Thanks for the correction. (And never mind, Steve.)

Try logging out of your Live ID..
Tools - Options - Connection
click on "Stop signing in"

That usually lets it compact for me...
Then sign back in.

Try this: Close Windows Live Mail. Check Task Manager to make sure
no wlmail.exe process is running. Open Windows Live Mail, and without
doing anything in it, close it again. That should initiate the prompt
"Recover unused disk space?" Click 'Yes', and hopefully it will compact
successfully. If the problem continues, request help in the WLM newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Another reason not to install WLM.

No app is free from bugs. Most who have tried Windows Live Mail
agree that it has fewer bugs and more features than Windows Mail.

Anything that destroys messages when the user removes the account is a piece
of junk.

The majority opinion doesn't enhance the program quality or lack thereof.

Update - I am still getting the error message but I have found a workaround.

When closing Windows Live Mail and getting the 'Do you want to compact to save space etc'
I click Ok. Then a box flashes up for a split second saying something about backing-up
the database. Then I get another error box saying:
' The folder is currently in use by Windows Live Mail or by another application'.

This only happens if I close Windows Live Mail with newsgroups showing in the right pane,
the reading pane. If I switch to Mail, Calendar or Contacts before exiting no error when it wants to compact.

I had that same problem DL WLM installed it but didn't activate it (sign up any mail accounts) DL system updates and it stopped the error messages and compacted the messages

I am running Windows 7 and I recently upgraded to 7077. I can still
re-create the error.
On my install it seems that when Newsgroups is opened it opens a database
that never gets closed.
If I don't go to Newsgroups, but open another app, like Calendar and then
exit WLM it will compact ok.
If I open Newsgroups , then close Newsgroups, then exit I get a ' folder
in use ' error.

Seriously? Do you really expect help, when using a pirate copy of a beta
operating system?

Oh PUH-leez!

Pirate copy of BETA software? WHO GIVES A CRAP?

Besides, to "pirate", one must find and use something that has to be
PAID for WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT, you nit-wit.
