Mail settings changing by themselves

I have setup a friends vista mail to authenticate via pacbell.net's servers
for outgoing mail. All works well for a few days, then stops working. Upon
re-examination of the mail settings, the smtp port has reverted to 25 (set
manually to 460 something) and the use ssl checkbox is unchecked.

I have showed my friend how to re-set the settings so he is not losing much
sleep over this one, but it annoys me. Any help?

He is running vista mail v 6.06.????. Not sure what version of vista
(sorry, I am not at the machine).

Spontaneous settings changes are often due to rogue AntiVirus email
scanners, is your friend running one?

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware Pro's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, Norton AntiVirus,
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, many other anti-virus
applications, and Zone Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

Sorry to follow up on my own post, but...

Can I make my friends settings problems go away if I install windows live
mail on his Vista box?

McAfee's email scanner is one of the two biggest troublemakers for not only
Windows Mail, but virtually ALL email clients. Uninstall McAfee, use their
cleanup tool to remove all the crud the uninstaller leaves behind, then do a
custom re-install WITHOUT any email scanning features. You do not need
emails scanning whatsoever, it does nothing but waste time and create
problems where none otherwise exist in exchange for giving you NO additional
protection at all. You are FULLY protected without it, provided you keep
McAfee's resident file system scanner up to date.
