mail not sent immediately upon clicking SEND

After composing an email in Outlook 2003 using Word as the editor, when I
click 'Send', the message sits in the Outbox until the next scheduled
Send/Receive cycle or until I manually send via the menu option.

My system was recently reset by our IT department, and this is a new problem
since the reset.

So, did you check if the "send immediately if connected" option in
Outlook was enabled?
