Mail Merge Fields

I have a program that executes Word merges directly from it's exported data.
Sometimes I need to export dates, which are exported in a text format. Using
an if...then...else merge field, how can I convert these text dates to actual
dates for the purposes of saying if date a is less than date b then 1 else 2?
Please advise.

in this instance
{IF {Mergefield Datefield1 \@ "yyyyMMdd"} < {Mergefield Datefield2 \@
"yyyyMMdd"} "1" "2"}
should work.
